FT Lawyers’ Research Project

The FT Lawyers’ Research aims to document the national and international legal standards that apply to citizenship determination and verification processes, while applying them to the Foreigner Tribunals process in Assam. It seeks to integrate three domains of research — international and transnational legal standards, municipal legal standards, and empirical inputs from extensive case interviews — to assess and critique the procedure and working of Foreigner Tribunals in Assam.

Detention Research Project

The Detention Research aims to document the conditions in the six active detention centres in Assam (Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, and Silchar) via elaborate interviews conducted with former detainees. The interviews involve a thorough breakdown of the citizenship processes through which the detainees were incarcerated, their experiences in the detention centres, and how their life has been impacted after being released from these carceral spaces. It seeks to document the conditions prevalent in detention centres and the State processes that pave the way towards incarceration, as well as how such incarceration has impacted the former detainees on a social, physiological, and psychological level after being released.

High Court Database Research Project

The database aims to study the Gauhati HC decisions from 2010-2021 in writ petitions challenging the petitioner’s status as foreigners as decided by the Foreigners’ Tribunals or the ECI.
